The Ultimate Guide to Microneedling

When it comes to exfoliating and rejuvenating the skin using methods like lasering, light therapy, and needling, it’s more important than ever to enlist the help of a trusted aesthetics professional.

When it comes to exfoliating and rejuvenating the skin using methods like lasering, light therapy, and needling, it’s more important than ever to enlist the help of a trusted aesthetics professional. Aesthetics technology is everywhere you go, so it’s important to be familiar with the process, prepared for the experience, and excited for your amazing results!

Microneedling is an incredibly effective skin treatment that targets some of the most stubborn skin concerns with revolutionary aesthetics technology. When searching for microneedling in Houston, make sure you know the facts and choose an aesthetics provider that makes you feel comfortable and confident!

The time of dermarollers is no more! Microneedling is a professional skin rejuvenation treatment that uses the SkinPen, an innovative needling device, providing us more control and better results. Unlike dermarollers that cause unwarranted damage to the skin, microneedling treatments are highly targeted to your areas of concern without harming the surrounding tissue.

Microneedling works by creating tiny, targeted micro-wounds in the skin that trigger your body’s natural healing process. That process causes an influx of collagen and elastin, two proteins that help the skin look more even, plump, and youthful. Microneedling treatments in Houston are often paired with hydrating serums to boost your age-rewinding results.

In addition to sparking your skin’s natural rejuvenation process, microneedling also boosts the effectiveness of your topical skincare products. The treatments allow your cleansers, serums, and moisturizers to penetrate deeper into your dermis (the layer of living tissue just beneath the surface) so your skin can soak up every bit of those hydrating ingredients!

Microneedling revolutionized the aesthetics industry with its power to treat common skin concerns with a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure. Microneedling achieves lasting results with minimal downtime, making it the top choice for men and women alike looking to treat difficult skin issues.

Microneedling is effective on all skin types and textures, and can be done anywhere on the body to reduce or reverse conditions like:

  • Acne scars & stretch marks
  • Injury or trauma scars
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Rough skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Dull, sallow skin

Let us walk you through the microneedling treatment step by step! Here is everything you can expect from microneedling in Houston.

The first step to any treatment at Medical Aesthetics & Laser is to meet with one of our providers for a consultation and design a custom treatment plan for your unique needs. Our team will use this time to get to know you, your concerns, and your goals so that they can make personalized recommendations to get you real results.

To make sure that your microneedling results are the age-rewinding, skin-brightening solution of your dreams, there are a few things you can do to prepare!

In general, you’ll want to avoid anything that might increase skin sensitivity, and stay extra hydrated inside and out.

In the week leading up to your treatment, move your skincare products like retinoids, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid to the back of the cabinet. You should avoid any topical agents, as well as anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, aspirin, ginkgo, vitamin E, and fish oil. These ingredients have blood thinning properties that can affect the microneedling treatment and healing process.

Also inform your aesthetician of any skin-targeted medications you’re taking. Some examples are doxycycline, minocycline, and accutane, which are commonly prescribed to treat acne.

When it comes to best practices, skip out on any lasers, sun, and hair removal methods for the week leading up to your appointment. This includes:

  • Tanning beds
  • Long period of time outdoors
  • IPL treatments
  • Laser hair removal
  • Waxing
  • Epilaters
  • Electrolysis
  • Shaving (on the day before or of)

On the day of your treatment, skip your morning routine! Come to your appointment with a bare treatment area–no makeup, lotion, oil, powder, sunscreen, or perfume.

An appointment for microneedling in Houston lasts anywhere from 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the area you’re getting treated. We recommend budgeting at least one hour of your day to spend with us per appointment. Afterwards, give yourself at least one full day of rest without social outings, makeup, or sun exposure.

Because the results of microneedling are progressive and cumulative, the number of treatments needed to achieve your results will look different for everyone. If your goals are skin tightening and smoothing, we recommend at least 3 sessions. Scar reduction is typically accomplished in 3-6 sessions. You can come back for another session as soon as 4-6 weeks after each microneedling treatment.

After your microneedling treatment in Houston, your skin will be a bit sensitive. You’ll need to be extra careful about products you use and what your skin is exposed to.

Keep your more intense skincare products like retinoids and salicylic acids on the shelf for at least 5 days, or until your skin is no longer sensitive. Instead, use your hands to gently wash your skin with a fragrance-free, alcohol-free cleanser and cool water. Also avoid icing your face or using any anti-inflammatory products—your skin is working all on its own!

The most important rule to follow after a microneedling treatment is NOT to pick, scratch, or scrub the treated skin. We know it can be tempting to grab at skin that is flaking or peeling, but we promise it’s all part of your skin’s natural process. Picking could cause unnecessary damage. Instead, make sure your skin is hydrated with a hyaluronic acid serum or cream.

Some extra tips for helping the healing process:

  • Avoid activities or exercise that could cause sweating for at least 48 hours
  • Sleep with your head elevated for a few days after your treatment to minimize swelling
  • Avoid sun exposure as much as you can while your skin is extra sensitive

Combining other aesthetic treatment with microneedling in Houston boosts your initial treatment results and helps those results last longer!

If you chose microneedling to help treat acne scars or texture, dermaplaning is the perfect add-on treatment. Dermaplaning is an exfoliating facial treatment that removes dead skin and buildup to reveal more smooth, even, and bright skin. It is done in-office with a medical-grade scalpel and there is no downtime required.

If you’re ready to level-up in your aesthetics journey, injectables like Botox are a great post-microneedling treatment option in combating fine lines and wrinkles from the inside out. Botox is a nerve blocker, which temporarily constrains the tiny facial muscles that contract and cause smiles, frowns, or other expressive faces. When properly injected by the specialists at Medical Aesthetics and Laser, Botox relaxes and prevents these muscles from contracting, softening the complexion, reducing wrinkles and folds, and preventing new wrinkles from forming.

If you struggle with sun damage or sun spots as you age, the Forever Young BBL photofacial makes the perfect maintenance treatment. The powerful pulsed light in Forever Young BBL gently heats the top layers of skin to stimulate new collagen production and give skin a firmer, more youthful appearance. With virtually no downtime, you can see visible results immediately.
